I guess the message for me would be: Jesus fulfilled his purpose just as he said he would, and yet those closest to him did not believe in the witness to this by other believers but stubbornly refuted it until faced with Jesus in person.
My message to others would be that even though I myself many times stubbornly refuse to see the reality and miraculous grace of Jesus until faced with some unrefutable proof, Jesus loves us all enough to make the sacrifice anyway, and then graciously gives me the "proof" when I need it most. When I don't or can't take the steps toward him, he continually takes the steps toward me.
I think that it would have been very difficult for a human to accept the overwhelming miracle even though it had been told to them; and the skepticism and stubborness of humans surfaced along with shock and disbelief and fear that only a little time and proof could dispell. These men were humans and had difficulities all along until Jesus returned and it finally was pulled together in their minds. This is what I think...nck
